“Ritorno al Cotone”
Ritorno al Cotone (Back to cotton) is a work in progress which digs into the deepest roots of Benedetta Falugi’s family history. The series is a photographic narrative of the industrial town of Piombino and its working class district, called indeed il Cotone (the Cotton).
Life in “il Cotone” revolves around the rhythms, the fumes, the clangour and the exhalations of the great steel mill. Familiar scenes from the photographer’s past include the same factory in which her paternal grandfather worked, and the family house that is just a few meters away from the wall that separates the steel mill from the working class district.
The immortal places captured by Benedetta Falugi’s shots represent an attitude that comes from a time when work and human relationships were characterized by values of solidarity and collective belonging.
